5 DIY Skin “pick-me –ups” easy to do at home
Has the onslaught of summer and the festive season left you and your skin feeling a little frazzled?
If you’re anything like me the increase in socialising at this time of year, (although loads of fun), has unfortunately increased my intake of alcohol and affected my choices on nutritional food intake. I am also feeling dehydrated and my skin is drier as a result of the harsh summer sun and increased exposure to air conditioning. So I feel in need of a few DIY skin pick me ups – how about you?
Even as a teenager knew the benefits of natural produce on my skin. I have many memories of mashing bananas and avocados, slicing cucumbers, squeezing lemons not to cook up a feast but rather to put on my face and body- much to my mum’s dismay! So I thought it was a good time to get back to nature and resurrect some of my DIY recipes for a quick “pick me up”.
Here are 5 of my old time favourites.
1. Revitalising Rose Water facial and body Mist
Rose water helps hydrate, revitalise and moisturise the skin giving it with that refreshed look. It also maintain’s skin’s pH balance. The beautiful aroma also helps with relaxation and relieving stress. Rosewater is created by distilling rose petals, which results in an aromatic liquid infused with the oils and essence of the petals. Source
Jojoba oil moisturises and protects the skin. Combined, these ingredients are very beneficial to the skin.
Ingredients: 1/2 cup rose water 1 tablespoon jojoba oil Mix ingredients, put in a spray bottle and spray as required.
2. Olive Oil Natural Moisturiser
Olive oil is packed with anti-aging antioxidants and hydrating squalene, making it superb for hair, skin, and nails. Use olive oil on your skin to cleanse and moisturize. It’s also great for removing makeup naturally. Olive oil is also known for having a healing effect on sun-damaged skin, so perfect for sun-exposure over summer. Source
Dip a cotton ball in a small cup with coconut or olive oil and apply to skin as desired.
3. Banana Mask For Glowing Skin
This is an “oldie but a goodie”. Bananas contain vitamins A, B, C, and E, and minerals such as potassium nourish and hydrate the skin. They make the skin soft and glowing and can also lighten blemishes. Source
- A ripe banana
- 1 teaspoons water
Mash and apply evenly on face, neck and decolletage, (avoiding eye area). Leave it on for 15 minutes then rinse off thoroughly with water.
4. Green Tea antioxidant Toner
Green tea leaves are rich in flavonoids, which maintain the collagen production in the skin. It maintains the elasticity of the skin, makes your skin glow, and reverses the signs of ageing. Source
- 1 tablespoon green tea leaves
- 1 cup water Boil the tea leaves in water.
When they impart color, remove from heat. Allow to Cool.
Apply all over the face with a cotton ball. After 10 minutes wash off with water.
5. Cucumber for youthful eyes
Cucumbers are used on eyes as they are great for the dark circles under the eyes can also make your skin appear more youthful and glowing. The ascorbic acid and caffeic acid in cucumbers brings down the water retention in the eyes which reduces swelling and puffiness around the eyes. Source
Ingredients: Cucumber slices
Simply apply two slices of freshly cut cucumber onto your eye area to help reduce the appearance of under eye darkness and puffiness.
Alternatively you can soak two cotton balls in the cucumber juice and apply it to your eyes. Also cucumbers can provide instant, cooling relief on a sunburn.
If you experience sun burn, you can rub a freshly sliced cucumber on your skin to cool it down.
