How to Avoid Skin Irritation Naturally

My son Julian suffered from severe eczema for many years so I saw first-hand how distressing these skin conditions can be. I looked for natural ways to help him avoid having skin flare-ups and we found several that worked really well for him. So I’d like to share these with anyone  looking for natural ways to avoid skin irritation, as they may help you too.

Managing Stress

Stress causes a chemical response in your body that makes skin more sensitive and reactive. It can therefore aggravate eczema, psoriasis and rosacea. It can also make it harder for skin conditions to heal.

So do your favourite stress busting activities to keep stress at bay. Here are some you could try-

Sing or dance to your favourite song


Do breathing exercises

Try aromatherapy (avoid synthetic fragrances)

Keep a gratitude diary


Say yes to Self-care and set boundaries to demands on your time

Keep a diary

Certain foods or allergens (such as pet hair or pollen) can trigger skin flare-ups and make skin conditions worse. You could start a simple diary, listing flare-ups and what you’ve eaten and drunk, any allergens you might have come into contact including laundry detergents, shower gel and shampoo you’ve used, and so on. 

Its good to keep your diary for at least two weeks. If you think something might be irritating your skin, try eliminating it to see if you notice a positive difference. Triggers that affected my son included dog & cat hair, shellfish, nuts & eggs but everyone is everyone is different.

Embrace natural clothing

Natural fabrics such as cotton & bamboo allow your skin to ‘breathe’, so tend to be better for sensitive skin than manmade fibres. Lanolin in wool is a common trigger for people with sensitive skin.

Avoid body lotions with synthetic fragrances

When your skin is feeling dry and itchy, or flaking, it’s tempting to reach for a rich body lotion. Unfortunately, some creams and lotions can make the situation worse, especially ones that contain synthetic perfumes.

Sunflower oil is rich in nutrients and antioxidant and has been found to be effective against acne, eczema, inflammation, general redness and irritation of the skin. 

Our bodies produce fat known as ceramides which helps to protect the skin barrier from infection. Studies by the National Eczema Association suggest that sunflower seed oil can stimulate natural ceramide production enhancing the skin-barrier function which increases protection from bacteria and helps to heal the skin. Sunflower seed oil is also naturally soothing and improves the skin’s ability to retain moisture making it very beneficial for dry, dehydrated or sensitive skin.
