Natural soaps are kind to your skin and the planet, 🌎 in addition to gently and effectively cleansing your skin, they relieve tension and relax your mood through their aromatherapy essential oils and feed your skin with natural oils like coconut and olive. 🌿
They are also better for the planet as they don’t harm the environment when the residue washes down the drain. What’s not to love!
On the other hand, conventional soaps that contain nasties like artificial colours, fragrances, sulphates and petroleum are harmful to you and the planet. 😧
You may have heard your skin referred to as your largest and most important organ. This is largely due to your skin providing a protective barrier to your internal organs and its role in flushing out toxins and excess minerals from the body.
It absorbs substances that are good for you, like Vitamin D from the sun, or healing herbals, and essential oils but unfortunately it also absorbs substances that are BAD for you including harmful chemicals in your skincare 🙍🏻♀️.
Your skin comes into contact with soaps and body washes every day whilst you shower and in regular hand washing. Ensuring these products are free of nasties is therefore really important for your and your family’s health and wellbeing.
Chemicals in common soaps are a real concern. They can disrupt your hormones, promote allergies, lead to reproductive issues and increase risk of some cancers. They can also overwhelm your immune system and weaken your skin’s defence against disease-causing viruses, bacteria, fungal infections, and even cancer and other serious conditions 🙅♀️.
I certainly want to avoid these harmful chemicals and I’m sure you do too.
So here is a short list of 7 nasty chemicals commonly found in body soap to avoid-
Did you know that the term “Fragrance”could actually be a cocktail of harmful synthetic chemicals.? Synthetic chemicals and cancer-causing toxins (like phthalates, used to make fragrances last longer) are often hiding under this sneaky term. Ongoing exposure to fragrances has been shown to negatively impact the central nervous system and can trigger allergies, migraines and asthma symptoms.
When parabens are applied to your skin, they enter the bloodstream and the body mistakes them for estrogen. When the body thinks there is an abnormally high amount of estrogen present in the bloodstream it can reacts by decreasing muscle mass, increasing fat deposits, causing early onset of puberty or spurring reproductive difficulties in both men and women.
These chemicals are very common as they are used to produce lather and bubbles in soap. Some common sulfates are SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) and SLES (sodium laureth sulfate). They strip the skin of its natural oils and impair the skins ability to maintain moisture. They are also irritants for people with sensitive skin or eczema.
This chemical is most often found in antibacterial soap. Recent studies have found that triclosan actually promotes the emergence and growth of bacteria resistant to antibiotic cleansers. It also creates dioxin, a carcinogen that has been found in high levels in human breast milk. Dioxins have disruptive effects on the endocrine system and negatively affect thyroid functions.
This chemical can depress the nervous system, bringing on dizziness, vomiting, and sudden drops in blood pressure if inhaled.
6. Benzyl Acetate
This chemical is a eye and lung irritant, and a known carcinogen that has been associated with pancreatic cancer.
This chemical is on the EPA’s hazardous waste list! It can irritate the respiratory tract and cause vision impairments and loss of muscle control.
That all sounds very nasty doesn’t it!
