Have you heard the hype around parabens but you’re not really sure why they are so bad or even what they are?
Because they are such a common ingredient in skincare, make up and haircare products I want to arm you with extra information to help you make safer and healthier shopping choices for you and your family going forward.
So here we go….
Parabens are a group of chemicals commonly used as artificial preservatives in cosmetic and body care products since the 1920s. They allow products to last long periods, even years in our bathroom cabinets. They prolong shelf life by preventing the growth of mould and bacteria within them. Although preservatives are important for keeping our products safe from bacteria, there are healthier, more natural alternatives.
The non-profit Campaign for Safe Cosmetics say parabens are known to disrupt hormone function, an effect that is linked to increased risk of breast cancer and reproductive toxicity. They say also that Parabens mimic estrogen by binding to estrogen receptors on cells.
Now thats pretty serious wouldn’t you agree?
You have likely heard that your skin is the largest organ and it absorbs whatever you put on it. So when you apply products to your skin or hair that contain these toxic preservatives they also enter your body through your skin and into your bloodstream.
Also as products containing Parabens wash down the drain they also have a negative impact the environment. Studies have reported that parabens were found in the bodies of marine mammals and it was likely that these parabens come from products we use that are washed into the sewage system and released into the environment. They have also been detected in rivers and the soil. Scarey hey?
So how do you avoid these toxic chemicals?
The best way to avoid these toxins is to be mindful of your skincare, make-up and hair care product choices. Always chcek the labels of the products you are using or about to buy for dangerous toxins that you need to avoid for your healths sake.
When checking the ingredients list on the labels, unfortunately, it’s not just a case of just looking for the word parabens or contains parabens.
Intead you need to look out for ingredient names ending in parabens like butylparaben, methylparaben and propylparaben which are the most commonly found parabens.
Look out for natural skincare and beauty products that are paraben free like our rawbeauty naturally skincare range. We use only the purest, most natural ingredients so that our skincare products are formulated free of nasties. You won’t find parabens, sulphates, artificial colours or fragrances in any of our products.
I hope you feel a little more empowered when making your next beauty product purchase by taking the time to checkout the label for toxins like parabens and chasing to skip any products with them listed.
My desire is to help you make more educated and conscious decisions about what you put on your precious skin going forward.
